This young male koala was admitted into care with Friends of the Koala in Lismore NSW weighing in at 622 grams. Franklin was found in poor condition, dehydrated and likely to have been abandoned by his mother. He responded well to treatment with his care progressing well. Franklin developed a minor case of ocular chlamydia which was also successfully treated.
Once Franklin was old enough he was placed into the pre release programme where he deteriorated and lost condition. Repeated attempts were made to “toughen him up” but he did not cope well. Consequently it was decided that he was unlikely to survive in the wild and was then transferred to the Koala Hospital.
Staff at the Koala Hospital have found Franklin to be a very easy koala to work with and as he is considered to be an extremely good looking young male, staff decided to call him “George Clooney”.
Ballina Franklin is not only now part of our permanent team of koalas but he is now an intergral part of wild koala breeding programme – something we are sure he will handle quite well!
